Spark plug caps

Just a note on spark plug caps. I'd noticed that on my R80 machine there must have been some leeking of the insulation- and i was getting severe RF interference on the radio. I actally got a shock off the plug cap too, and the engine was getting difficult to start.
Replaced the cap and eliminated the problems. It's recommended that you do periodically change the caps. I dismantled the old cap to see the effects inside- obviously some spark bridging had eroded away the contacts, and there was a very large build up of carbon.

Also beware that when changing the cap- use one of the rubber ones as illustrated below. The regular ceramic ones are cheaper, but they rely on the screw on top of the plug to stay on. For paramotoring applications the rubber ones are better as the rubber grips onto the body of the plug also for additional holding. You can also improve fitting by fixing the screw top on top of the plug- stopping it from rotating. You can either 'snag' the threads.. or apply a little solder to lock this.

NGK plug caps should be availble from motorcycle/carting shops.

Gary... dont' worry i've tested the lights with the radio- absolutely no RF interference at all..
Do you need a basic set - lights and driver only, or lights and battery?

Radio interference

I have been getting some comments from people living near my airfields that they are getting TV interference when I start my engine. I have already changed the plug cap, as we discussed recently Gordon, so I'm sure its not that. I was thinking of fitting a suppressor. Anybody got any comments on this.

That's strange Chris- what sort of distances are involved here? From starting position to the TV aerial? Check the spark gap distance on your plug- should be 0.5mm from memory, most of the NGKs come at 0.7mm default. There may also be a 'leek' from the HT cable or a short somewhere else on the alternator circuit causing a secondary spark as it earths..... Any spark will generate an RF signal, and cause interference.

Distance from field is about 100mtrs. Gap on plug was 0.6 but have now changed it to 0.5. Not sure wot else to check. Doesn't appear to be a spark from leads.
