Class 2 Medical

To fly Paramotor in Ireland, pilots must apply for an exemption from the Irish Aviation Authority, or fly under the control of an IAA approved instructor.
To apply for an exemption, pilots must produce evidence of an appropriate approved qualification, (BMMA & IHPA courses currently, and IPPHA syllabus) and provide a valid JAR- FCL Class2 medical Certificate.

Class 2 medical can be obtained through any one of the IAA approved AME ( Aero Medical Examiners)

A current list can be found on IAA site:

Hi Johnny,

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Oisin,
Hope you guys are having a good time in Portugal!
Would have mixed feelings on your proposal regarding any GP doing the pilots medical. The AME doctors need specific training 16 hrs basic course and annual continuing medical education in Aviation Medicine usually involves travelling to Holland for updating, there is alot in it which most GPs wouldnt have a clue about, most of the testing I agree has nothing to do with PPG but there is alot of it there which is relavent. The AME's have a passion for flying and are tuned to small ailments which would make you at risk in the air for yourselves or others including madness.

I fill out the UK medicals for some local Microlite pilots, clinically if you are able to walk, then you are fit to fly. (I dont think this is good enough for anyone getting into the air.).
I think the IAA are trying to not allow pilots fly in Ireland without a Class 2 and doing away with the Donegal pilots getting their licence in the North.

I have contacted Aneteje about becoming an AME and they feel they have enough in Ireland, and its not worth the money. I hope to take over if my Uncle retires up here

Johnny

I would love to continue the debate and see if there is some simplified common ground. As Gordon suggests, there are a good few areas of the Class 2 that would be important in aircraft with instrumentation and using formal runways etc, but presumably of less importance to PPG pilots.
I had to travel to Kildare to get my class 2 because the alternative was to wait months in Cork where there is only one AME ( other than Bantry) They seem to be very busy down here, and another would help reduce the wait, one would have thought.

I certainly am not trying to do any AME's out of business, but a (cheaper) simpler medical might encourage more to get medicals and push on with getting exemptions. Its a matter of making it as straightforward as possible.

I would be very interested in your thoughts on the review the IHPA had undertaken on the issue? I am sure Dara would be happy to share with you on his return?

I think the subject is worth a debate in its own posting, and have copied this discussion to a new heading in Legal/ Statutory... not to let it get lost in this debate!!

Thanks Johnny,

Regards,

Oisin

Hi Oisin
As I wrote previously I personally don't believe you can legislate against madness, if I am insane enough to fly into the Queens residence or a boxing match, Croke Park or the Aras, I don't think the lack of a licence or an exemption will stop me doing whatever I please.
However one of the points the IAA make is that they would not have to issue me with an exemption just because I can physically complete all the tasks and tick all the other boxes.
But instead of me reinterpreting the IAAs points why don't we put down all of our objections to the class 2 on this thread and when everyone has put forward their points we can collate them and submit them to the IAA. We can ask them to explain their rational for their decision making, so that we can encourage more pilots to fly legally.

Perhaps Dara could ask for permission to upload Dr Peter Saundby scientific paper on the subject of Class 2 medicals on this forum so we can all make informed decisions, just a thought.
Cheers
Gerry

To get the ball rolling I reckon that the Class 2 may be instrumental in excluding older, experienced but less fit pilots and that the considerable extra costs imposed discourages applications and may force early retirement from the sport.

Gaining a Class 2 medical won't stop pilots flying when suffering from short-term illness, fatigue, the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescribed medication, that's all down to the pilot. So what is the point of the Class 2?

Most pilots have valid driving licences that confirms their visual ability, hearing requirements can be addressed by the fact that most pilots train under radio instruction and after completing training they don't need radios.

The IAA has already indicated that they are willing to cater for disabled pilots so maybe the can let us know what disabilities they can/cannot cater for or will it be on an individual basis.
