Photographic competition- PPG Ireland

A few months back we had various threads on aerial photographs/videos, etc.... and a competition was mentioned. I think this would be a great idea, and would certainly give us an opportunity to share some of our best images, and generate a little interest for the sport in Ireland generally.
I'm proposing that during the summer we go about our business and perhaps in November we will shortlist a number of images and put it to a public vote for the most interesting image.
Maybe if there is sufficient interest well get a 'PPG Ireland' Calendar done with some of the best shots and of course the winning shot.
The theme for the photos is pretty open- just 'Paramotoring and Ireland', interpretation can be anything... but the rules will be-
- Photos can only be submitted by PPG Ireland members
- Photos must be the original work of the PPG Ireland member
- Subject matter must be in some way related to the sport and Ireland
- Photos must be recent, date and time information must be included with the entry.
- Members can submit as many pictures as they wish
- Image definition to be at least 5MP resolution
- Images should be accompanied by a brief description about the flight/subject matter
- Semifinalists shortlists will be defined by an impartial judge (non- PPG Ireland affiliated- to be decided)
- Public internet vote will decide the winner

Prize/s will be modest - to be determined, but i'll see if i can get some freebees or something lined up. The pride being best PPG Ireland photographer would surely be enough though....

Please email entries to me and i'll collate them together onto a webpage linked to this site.

Any questions, please email me.
I'll set up a new forum folder specifically for the competition soon.

photo competition

sounds fun....not sure if I agree with the embargo on anything under 5 mp though!! George Steinmetz was using a Nikon 8008 film camera until a couple of years back, and pulled off some pretty good shots  My trusty powershot Canon (3.2mp) took some nice photos until it died last year. A good photo is a good photo, and you have to work harder with the less powerful cameras. That said, most people probably have 5mp on their phone camera these days

Nice idea!

Did a 'Cork PPG' calander at Christmas for 2008, for local 'select' distribution. Nice idea and very simple.

Donal- You're right of course... perhaps we should extend it to 3MP for digital cameras, and also open it for 35mm also. Just wasnt sure if a lot of guys were still using them.
As long as 'printable quality' can be maintained.

fantastic idea, I suppose since youre the organiser you cant take part Gordon, after all youre a regular on the BBC website with your goodies from the sky
How about doing up a list of entrants and everyone chipping in €50 each and if we have enough participants we could have 3 prizes of vouchers for a paramotor store which could be given out at the first annual Ireland PPG christmas ball which will be held in a central location

Lads
Dont know if anyone submitted any pictures, perhaps Gordon can update us-
if not then I suggest pick 10 of your best and get them in to Gordon now- its hardly that big a job ( this idea has died a death and needs a kick in the ar*e ) they dont need to be first class quality, taken from ground or air....it doesnt matter just throw a few together, myself, Gordon, Dara, Oisin, Alwyn, Chris Bailey have all taken pictures that I know about so come on and get them in now over the holidays, we can use these pictures to promote paramotoring, pictures of fly-ins etc showing the good craic and how everyone pitches together to make this the great sport it is....
Right I'm going for a flight :D

Hi Dean,

You're right - Gordon's idea was a great one and we should all respond. I've submitted my 22 best shots. I've also uploaded them to Fotki if anyone cares to view them.

My personal favourite is the slightly surreal shot of Mike entitled "Mike on Finals (#7328)" - the fourth pic in the album with an unexpectedly beautiful green lens flare. The fifth shot (also surreal) "Jason Like Icarus (#7335)" isn't bad either - especially since it's my wing and motor that Jason was flying! I well remember that there was a spectacular sunset that evening.

To view my pics just go to the link below. The simplest way to see them is (when looking at the thumbnails) to click on "SlideShow" in the upper right-hand side of the screen.

Nice shots Dara. I particularly like the shots over the Canal in Kildare.

Hi Oisin,

Yours are excellent - and you have far more in-air shots than I have. Well done! Let's hope that lots more pilots submit pics so that there's a real competition.

Incidentally, if you listen to the end of your movie clip of Michel's lecture you'll hear my voice just starting to make a point about light wind turns!

Cheers,

P.S. Where is the castle in Pic #5? It looks a bit like Knappogue castle but I don't think it is it. Also is the smooth-stoned mountain in Pic #16 in the Burren?

P.P.S. Why were you not in bed at 1:40am???

Did they ever get it finished......................?

Image

There is likely to be plenty of help available to finish building projects in 2009!

Lots of good photos.

There must be loads more.. Chris has been taking his SLR up with him...?

Nice to see them together.

Oisin,
With the current climate, Doe castle and Greenan will be fully restored in 2009.....
I haven't flown over that building site for a while, but i'm sure i has progresed well. I remember the day after there was a huge downpour of rain- i'm sure it didn't look as neat the following day..

Lads
Try this link, hopefully it will work, I have a few more to add when I can get them off the camera....some mighty shots coming up, great to see them, Oisin I rekon those ones of Michel with the boots hanging beside each ear are classic, I rekon we should email a few to the paramotor mag every month, maybe 3 a month, theres bound to be a few there they would publish, put Ireland firmly on the paramotor map :D

I have seen very few photos of that wing in flight!

Anyone take any photos of the fly-in up North a few months ago. Saw some Video only.
